Welcome Back!

I hope that everyone has enjoyed their Winter Break. It seems like we've been away for so long! I am super excited to get back to school on Monday and get back into the swing of things. While putting the finishing touches on our plans for next week I thought I'd take the time to give you a sneak peek at what we've got going on when we return.

Most importantly we will ease back into the routine of 4th grade, I'm anticipating some sleepy kiddos :) We will spend time catching up with one another and reviewing classroom procedures and routines.

Students will spend time on Monday revisiting the work they've done on their nonfiction article. Later in the week we will move forward with writing introductions, conclusions and another lesson on elaborating.

Social Studies

We will be diving into a new social studies until when we return. We will begin with a review of the Louisiana Purchase as we set the stage for our Westward Expansion study. We will learn more about Missouri becoming a state and the Missouri Compromise.

Next week we will spend our reading block building our stamina. We will review engagement strategies and practice those independently. Students will also complete fiction IRAs (Independent Reading Assessments). The results from these reading assessments will help me develop book clubs and strategy groups to meet everyones needs.

The following week we will begin our Historical Fiction unit (one of my favorites!!). After careful thought and planning, we are going to try historical fiction book clubs. Resources are limited, so I have been working with the other 4th grade teachers to research and compile a list of 4th grade appropriate historical fiction books. This is a work in progress, of course. If you would like to help our historical fiction book clubs, please consider donation a book club book or a set to our classroom library.

Historical fiction books can be found on our Amazon Classroom Wishlist:
Thank you so much for considering!

We will continue our work in our Teacher's Lounge project where students are working with early concepts of division in real world contexts. On Friday students will complete the 2nd math benchmark assessment of the year. The 3rd and final benchmark in math will come in May.

Important Upcoming Dates:

  • January 9th - Students Return To Barretts!
  • January 11th - Late Start
  • January 16th - No School
  • January 18th - Ms. Cavaness, Our Student Teacher, Joins Us!

Winter Party Fun!

Thank you so much to our wonderful room moms and all of the volunteers for making our Winter Party a success! The scavenger hunt was so much fun. Also, thank you so much for the Target Gift card. Surprisingly, I haven't spend it yet! But don't worry I have my eye on a few things :)

Below you'll find some pictures from our last day of school in 2016!
